What Is the Difference Between a Schengen Visa and an ETIAS Travel Authorization?

ETIAS is an electronically-issued online travel authorization system created for visa-free non-EU citizens, such as citizens of the United States. Thanks to its automatic application process, applying and receiving an approved ETIAS authorization is a straightforward process which saves U.S. citizens both time and hassle.

The Schengen Visa, or EU-visa, is not an automated visa, which means applicants are required to apply at least six weeks before going to Europe. Each application is processed on a case-by-case basis at the embassy or consulate of the first Schengen country the applicant will enter according to the itinerary they are required to provide.
