Lithuania is also known as the country of gently rolling hills, forests, rivers, streams, and lakes. It has 816 rivers and more than 2,800 lakes, and forest covers 1/3 of the country, including many protected regions and national parks.

Lithuania as a “very high human development” country. Lithuania has been among the fastest growing economies in the European Union. Basketball is the country’s national sport, and their National team is ranked third worldwide. Several players have even joined the NBA.

  • There is an oak in Lithuania that has survived The Crusades. The Stelmuze oak is the oldest tree in Europe
  • Every year the river Vilnia is dyed bright emerald green for St. Patrick’s Day. The idea originated in Chicago in the sixties, when Irish plumbers discovered an entirely harmless way of dyeing water
  • Lithuania has its own scent, called ‘the Scent of Lithuania’, with notes of wild flowers, lilacs, amber, ginger, raspberry, sandalwood and musk
  • Vilnius has an anonymous swing foundation. It’s a group of people who install swings all around the city, often changing their locations
  • White storks are the national symbol of Lithuania and children still believe storks bring babies. For a very good reason, though: Lithuania is home to over 13,000 pairs of storks
